Can Malaysians Study in Korea Without Knowing Korean?

Yes! The good news is that you can study in Korea even if you don’t know Korean. In recent years, more Korean universities have introduced English-taught degree programs to attract international students. This means you can complete your degree entirely in English without meeting a TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) requirement for admission.
However, you will usually need to prove your English proficiency by submitting a recognized test score, such as IELTS, TOEFL, or TEPS. The exact requirement varies depending on the university and program.
Some Korean universities also recognize Malaysia as an English-speaking education system for applicants who have completed their studies in English. In these cases, students may be exempt from submitting an English proficiency test. Nevertheless, we still recommend taking an English proficiency test if possible. A strong IELTS or TOEFL score can not only strengthen your application but may also make you eligible for scholarships at certain universities.
Besides English-taught programs, a small number of Korean universities have also started offering programs taught in Chinese. Although these options are increasing, they are still much less common than English-taught programs.
Even if you choose to study in an English-track program, we strongly recommend learning basic Korean before coming to Korea. While your classes may be conducted in English, daily life in Korea—such as ordering food, shopping, visiting hospitals, using public transportation, or communicating with locals—is much easier if you can speak basic Korean. Having a basic understanding of the language will help you adapt more quickly and enjoy your student life in Korea.
